he comedian Bowen Yang just made history to be the first full-blooded Asian cast of NBC’s Saturday Night Live.
Yang started in the sketch show as part of the writing staff and will now be a featured player in the upcoming 45th season. He first appeared last season as the North Korean leader “Kim Jong Un” together with host Sandra Oh.
The casting news was made upon the announcement of Leslie Jones leaving the show.
Ina statement made by SNL last Thursday, Yang will be joining the sketch show along with comedians Chloe Fineman and Shane Gilis.
The pressure is on this season as the campaign and election season ramps up. Beck Bennett, Bryant, MichaelChe, Pete Davidson, Colin Jost, Kyle Mooney, Cecily Strong, Thompson, Mikey Day, Heidi Gardner, Alex Moffat, Chris Redd, Melissa Villaseñor, Ego Nwodim, and McKinnon (who just signed for another year) will be returning as part of the cast.
SNL’s45th season will kick off on the 28th with musical guest Billie Eilish and host Woody Harrelson.
