While the rest of the world was busy for the holidays, the Philippines was battered with a Category 5 Typhoon Rai (locally known as Odette). On December 16, massive parts of Visayas and Mindanao felt the rage of the storm, cutting power and communications for days during and even after its landfall. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs’ latest assessments indicated that at least 2.6 million people are affected. Based on a report by the Philippines' disaster response agency last December 26, 378 deaths are confirmed while 60 are still missing.
