Chicago Asian Network strongly condemns the police brutality that led to the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery. These three people were struck down for being members of the black community; an affront to the ideals that the United States of America stands for—freedom, equality, and justice.
In view of this, we would like to amplify the call for support and unity for our black brothers and sisters as they gather to uphold their freedom of expression and right to a peaceful assembly, collectively grieving for the lives lost.
Let this incident never be forgotten. It has shown us that the COVID-19 pandemic is not the downfall of our nation but our failure to appreciate diversity and to utilize this to usher in an age of a better, more accepting society.
During the 1950’s to 1960’s, it was their bravery to launch a civil rights movement that helped people of color and of all races to be visible and gain equal access to fully realize the American Dream. We owe it to them and to their ancestors the life that we have now. Their plight is our plight.
As we stand together to denounce racism, institutionalized oppression, and unwarranted physical aggression, it is high time that you let your voice be heard for your voice matters.
Fully realize your role as a responsible citizen by texting 55156 with “FLOYD” for Floyd, “ENOUGH” for Taylor, and “JUSTICE” for Arbery. Let us honor their lives by making sure that their fate will not be passed on to another person. Take your civic participation a step further by registering and voting in the upcoming elections.
Today and every day, history has its eye on you.
