On a random hot summer day, Doug Julian and Charn Bak wondered what dessert would best satisfy their cravings–boba or ice cream? Then it hit them, why not combine the two?

This "aha" moment hit like a refreshing brain freeze, leading to the creation of a new culinary delight–Boba x Ice Cream.

Beginning the journey

Starting was definitely the hardest part. Traditional boba pearls tend to harden when exposed to cold temperature, which is far from the ideal ice cream. No one wants a soft serve with sneaky hard bites. But with their dedication, through extensive research and development, they cracked the code. They discovered a method to preserve the boba’s signature chewiness while mixed in ice cream. This critical breakthrough launched the product’s success.

Still, the journey wasn't without its hiccups. While they have succeeded in securing their business hallmark, not every flavor experiment has been a slam dunk. Once, the team embarked on a daring journey with an Indian-inspired flavor, hoping to create a unique taste sensation. While the result was certainly interesting, it didn’t quite hit the mark as an ice cream flavor. “It was a bold experiment and a great learning experience, teaching us the importance of balancing flavors in a way that suits the creamy, sweet nature of ice cream,” Doug looked back fondly.

Breakthrough moments

Since launching Boba x Ice Cream, there have been numerous proud moments, but one stands out vividly. For the founders, seeing their product on store shelves and witnessing their family's reaction was incredibly affirming. Hearing the words, "You did that?" from their loved ones was a heartfelt validation of their relentless effort and countless hours of hard work. The moment truly encapsulated the meaning of their journey, making every challenge worthwhile.

Customer feedback has also been overwhelmingly positive, with many heartwarming stories pouring in. One customer expressed immense gratitude for the lactose-free option, as it allowed them to enjoy dessert with their family once again. Another playful review described the ice cream as "a party in her mouth," capturing the joy and excitement that Boba x Ice Cream brings to its fans. “These kinds of feedback remind us why we do what we do and keep us motivated,” they expressed gratefully.

Currently, they are delighting dessert-lovers with unique tastes such as Salted Ube S'mores, Gooey Fried Banana, Strawberry Shortcake, Black Milk Tea, Churro Raspberry, Double Espresso, and Mango Chamoy. Bridging the community

The vision for Boba x Ice Cream extends beyond satisfying sweet cravings. The founders of Boba x Ice Cream hope to make a significant impact on the dessert industry and their local community by sourcing local ingredients whenever possible. And as they offer a product that caters to lactose-intolerant individuals, they aim to bring more inclusivity to the dessert market.

It also does not stop there. Connecting with the local community is a core value for Boba x Ice Cream. They explained that “engaging with our local community helps us stay connected and grounded, reminding us of the importance of community support in our journey.” Hence, the team actively participates in food festivals, charity events, and community gatherings, with a particular focus on the AAPI community. By hosting ice cream socials and fundraising events, this allows them to give back to the ones who supported them from the beginning, strengthening ties with their supporters.

Of course, as hosts of ice cream socials, there are surely some founder’s favorites. Doug confidently proclaims his love for the classic milk tea with brown sugar boba. For him, it embodies the perfect balance of creaminess and chewiness. As for any secret menu? “Let's just say there might be a hidden flavor or two—but we can't divulge that! You'll have to discover them for yourself.”

Bond to the vision

Looking ahead, the team envisions Boba x Ice Cream becoming a nationwide phenomenon. With recent expansion into Canada, they are excited to introduce their creation to boba lovers worldwide. “Our goal is to keep innovating and surprising our customers with exciting new offerings,” they excitedly shared. Patrons and new customers can expect new flavors and product lines (including vegan options!) that will surely make their vision for Boba x Ice Cream come true, to “bring more inclusivity to the dessert market.”  

With this, the creators offer a piece of invaluable advice for aspiring food entrepreneurs: “believe in your product and stay resilient.” Resilience and willingness to learn is the key to unlocking each challenge. They highlighted three important tasks: surround yourself with a supportive team, value customer feedback, and continuously improve your product. “Stay passionate and never lose sight of your vision,” they emphasized.
