Voices of the Vietnamese Diaspora: In Conversation with Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai

Join us as we welcome award-winning author and poet Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai to Chicago in conversation with Randy Kim, writer and speaker. Their conversation will explore Nguyễn’s novels,The Mountains Sing and Dust Child, which address intergenerational trauma and hardships from the war and the Vietnamese diaspora and the legacy of Vietnamese-Americans 50 years after the end of the US-Vietnam War. Nguyễn will also be discussing her latest project, The Color of Peace, her debut poetry collection in English. Together, Nguyễn and Kim will discuss the power of storytelling in shaping our community’s past, present, and future. Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai's poetry in Vietnamese has been written into popular songs and won top literary prizes in Việt Nam including the Poetry of the Year Award 2010 from the Hanoi Writers Association. She is the author of thirteen books in Vietnamese and English, including the internationally bestselling novels The Mountains Sing and Dust Child. She has been honored with numerous international awards including the PEN Oakland/Josephine Miles Literary Award, the International Book Award, the Lannan Literary Fellowship in Fiction, as well as Runner-up for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. Quế Mai’s writing has been translated into more than twenty-five languages and has appeared in major publications including The New York Times. An advocate for Vietnamese literature, she is the translator of eight books and was named by Forbes Việt Nam as one of 20 inspiring women of 2021. Randy Kim is a queer Viet-Khmer American with a Masters in Nonprofit Management at DePaul University. He currently works in development for a nonprofit. Randy was a creator and host of his award-winning podcast "The Banh Mi Chronicles.” He was the award recipient of this year’s 30th annual Communicator Awards. His podcast has been mentioned by Apple Podcast, National Geographic Society, and the Asian American Journalist Association. He is the founder of his current Substack newsletter, “Banh Mi Bites” which explores conversations with BIPOC creatives and more. Randy formerly served as a board member with The National Cambodian Heritage Museum in Chicago and is now serving as a board member with the Vietnamese Association of Illinois.

Throughout May, enjoy engaging conversations and presentations from Vietnamese artists, along with meet-ups designed to connect and strengthen the bonds in our community.
