Event Date: Wednesday, May 14 · 6 - 7:30pm CDT

Bangladeshi transgender artist, activist, and educator. Tara Asgar employs the format of a lecture performance to challenge the linear understanding of identity, migration, and queer artistic expression. Through the persona of Sharmillie Rahman, a fictional Dhaka-based art historian, Asgar critically examines South Asian queer cultural production, decolonization, and displacement while tracing her own journey as a queer South Asian immigrant navigating a world shaped by rising authoritarian regimes and anti-trans political propaganda. Offering insight into how marginalized voices survive within the art world, her performance lecture draws inspiration from traditional academic presentations, blending performance with critical discourse and the spectacle of identity.
