Event Date: September 20, 2024 4PM-8PM
On Friday, September 20, 4-8pm in conjunction with the Ragamala festival, award winning artist Indira Freitas Johnson invites all visitors to join in the creation of the Community Blessings Rangoli drawing in the Learning Lab. Rangoli drawings are made up of symbols, meant to bring beauty and harmony, and counter the negative forces of imbalance with the positive powers of wholeness and vitality. Traditional materials that will be used include rice flour, turmeric powder, earth, and flower petals and leaves. The Community Blessings Rangoli pattern will embody our wishes for the well-being of the entire Chicago community, celebrate our community’s place in the world, and demonstrates our collective hopes for a peaceful world. Indira Johnson, has drawn Rangoli Patterns throughout the US. As she explains, “one of the goals of this project is to discover through dialog, art and ritual the commonality of our human experience, and the spiritual potential inherent in all of us.” Using flowers, herbs, earth, and other natural materials this symbolic rangoli pattern will embody our wishes for the well-being of the entire Chicago community, celebrate our community’s place in the world, and demonstrates our collective hopes for a peaceful world.
